Because PC took the world by storm a little before Mac, the Mac computers were behind the curve on releasing programs like the popular MS Paint, but with downloads like MacPaint X, all Mac users can now use a similar program for free.

Overview of MacPaint X

Of all the different art-based programs to ever come out for computers, perhaps none have ever been quite as popular as MS Paint, for the PC. Of course, Mac is an entirely different OS, with different programs, so Mac never had its own version of Paint. Until now, that is, with the MacPaint X download. In many respects, it's almost an exact copy of the popular Paint program. Though in many other ways, Mac users greatly prefer it for its added features, smaller size and better graphics.

The MacPaint X program was developed and released by Mac Aspect and is available for the Mac, Mac OS X, and anything later than that. It's a full-sized computer program, not a mobile app. It is available for free and its only operating language is English.

How MacPaint X Works

What you will notice when you open up MacPaint X is a very similar program to MS Paint, if you have ever seen PC's program. If not, what you basically get is a large white square with some cool options in your toolbar. You can draw, paint, color, and even blend colors and add images as layers. It's more or less a low-rent Photoshop, and is great for younger people or anyone who likes to doodle. You also won't need tutorials to figure out how to use it. It's pretty self-explanatory.

The large buttons at the bottom of the screen make this Mac program a lot easier to figure out than Paint, and it's much easier to switch back and forth through the features. You also get a broader range of base colors, but can always blend, mix and match for whatever color you want.

MacPaintX Features

In terms of features, none of these little doodle programs are very feature rich. Maybe the best feature is the ability to add another image to the existing project. So if you're doodling multiple things, you do have the ability to create makeshift layers, resize photos and images, and create custom cutouts. Just know that you cannot add transparent images into the system. It will always have a visible border.

Another cool feature here is how much easier it is to flip your images and arrange them differently than with Paint. Instead of having to click and select horizontal, vertical, etc, you can simply drag the slide bar at the bottom of the program to flip and change angles.
